I've bought a couple of vehicles on ebay for more than 100 quid. I usually ask lots of questions before bidding, then turn up in person to collect (carrying a return ticket for the train...).

If it's not as described, I walk. Simple as that.

    This is a good rule

Both our current cars came off ebay, £7.5k and other end of country & £1400 from 10 miles away. Both were as described and paid for in cash

I brought our family car (kia sedona 53 plate) from ebay, lots of questions, also saw he had it advertisd on a company before listiing, was happy with purchase but it was in the UK so any problmes and i wiould have taken it up as it was £7600 later we were all happy.

My dh brought a bike from the USA for 7k US dollers without shipping, lots of questions and pictures and fun arranging shipping. difference being it was a race bike, the guy selling was on a forum adn had been for a number of yrs . He got the bike and was as described.

point being yes there are some really bad people out there but some good as well, you just need to think about it before you part with your money x
