Just going through the annual ritual of searching for car insurance and received a number of quotes via Comparethemarket.

I specified £100 voluntary excess and the cheapest providers added £250 compulsory excess making a total of £350 payable in the event of a claim.

Out of curiosity I changed the voluntary excess to £0 and received the same quote price!

I then increased the voluntary to £1000 and received the same quotes!!

So if I didn't know better and assumed a higher voluntary excess was giving me a cheaper price I would be giving the insurer the opportunity to pay out less or, in the event a claim was lower than the excess, paying nothing at all!

Or they system was playing up and the quotes were not correct.

If you try that on the comparison websites the figures can change a lot and some insurers move up and down the list as their price adjusts.

What has insurance quotes got to do with hiring a car?

    Just changed the thread title
  • Same thing happened for my wife's car insurance. I went with the £0 excess and the documents all came through correct.

A compulsory excess is normally added due to age, experience or vehicle type. I too always get a compulsory excess due to having a 2 seater convertible

Are you sure you hit the button to refresh the prices after changing the excess?

The higher the excess wont always give you the cheapest price, there is generally a "sweet spot" of a few hundred after which prices tend to go back up as you get less people offering those levels and because you start to get into those with very bad ratings doing anything they can to reduce prices so ironically actually increase them because they all buy the same thing (similarly to why TPFT is often more expensive than Comp)
