Looking for a MILD minty toothpaste!

My son is nearly 11 and despite a very traumatic experience at the dentist two years ago, is a pain in the neck when it comes to brushing his teeth. We had him in a really good routine using Green People's mandarin toothpaste as he doesn't like mint (at all) but our new dentist had a heart attack when he found out and said he should be using one with fluoride in it.
To cut a long story short, he's been relatively happily using Aquafresh Mild & Minty toothpaste....which we can't get anymore. Every other one I've tried him with since he complains are too minty, and I'm worried that until we can 'make' him grow up and use them regardless that he won't brush his teeth properly.
He's ok with the kids sensodyne pro-namal one, but it's expensive (we have three kids and I don't want to have to buy lots of toothpastes to keep everyone happy!)
Can anyone recommend a toothpaste which is actually a mild flavour please? Or - if there are any dentists out there - could I go back to buying him the fluoride free one he will use, and give him a fluoride supplement??? Is it more important to brush properly and regularly fluoride free than intermittently for less time with fluoride?

I'm not sure how minty will be too minty
but the colgate I bought from the chemists the other day seems to have a mild flavour. It's called Colgate Cavity Protection Caries.
There is also a make called Kingfisher, who do an aniseed flavour toothpaste, but they retail at about £3 per tube I think, so a bit pricey if he tries it and doesn't like it.0 -
I never think of the Lidl one as being all that strong. May be worth a try as it's only 59p. Not sure if it has fluoride tho."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Ha, I know, I've tried him on a couple which aren't minty at all to me, but he's really funny about it. Maybe once he's old enough to want to kiss girls he'll change his mind.......!!!0 -

Thank you....I did buy their herbal one to try thinking it was worth a shot for that price, but it's a very definite flavour which he didn't like so that's gone in the drawer for DH and I to use up, I'll try their minty one for him though and I'm shopping there tomorrow! Thanks x0 -
It has to be a fluoride toothpaste as it has to sit on the teeth (spit don't rinse) to be really effective.
Aldi do dentalux toothpaste tastes a bit liquorice and lemon , super drug do an adults strawberry toothpaste, Dagwood and tanner do various fruit flavours http://www.deliciousteeth.com and oranurse do unflavoured toothpaste http://www.oranurse.co.uk kingfisher do a mint and lemon fluoride toothpaste available at holland and Barrett's.
It must be an adult toothpaste as children's toothpaste once the child is past three doesn't contain enough fluoride.0 -

Fab, thank you! I'm compiling a list! I don't mind trying them as if he doesn't like them then the rest of us will, so they won't go to waste, I just don't want to spend a year's budget in one go if I can help it in the meantime!! Thanks for taking the time to reply x0 -
Quick question.....does it matter that it's a child's toothpaste if it has the magic 1450ppm in it???? Just been browsing and Asda do a Halos & Horns child's fruity flavoured (tick) toothpaste with the recommended 1450ppm fluoride (tick)....so that's ok isn't it??? who knew buying toothpaste would be such hard work???!!!!0

1450 is fine for children and adults .thanks for another to add to recommendations of non minty toothpastes.0

You just have to be careful as kingfisher do fluoride and non fluoride versions of both. The aldi dentalux herbal is a good budget alternative as it is a combination of lemon and fennel.0
