Tracing old debts

Hi

I understand that I need to obtain my credit report which will cover debts up to six years old but how do I trace older debts?

I know I have switched cards, loans and mortgages and I am sure I will have claims...somewhere, but I don't know how to find them.

I am reluctant to use a Claim company but I don't know how o trace these 'old' debts.

Thanks

You use your own memory and file keeping.

All a claims company does is ask you the same information and puts a stamp on the envelope containing your complaint letter. They have no means to trace data that is not in the public domain.
I am sure I will have claims.

If you cant remember, then how can you complain?

  • I think that you may have misinterpreted my question.I clearly do not remember or have the paperwork of the debts over six years old which as like most people once cleared I did not retain the papers.

Obviously, I cannot complain if I dont have the information therefore what I am asking is..is there a way to obtain information of cleared debts over six years old which will not be on my credit file?

As said already, only your own memory and file keeping.

The only way I can think is to send them a SAR? I did this with Barclaycard and got statements back to Feb 2001.

The problem with that is that it costs £10 a go and it does need you to know who you were with in the past. If you have 10 different companies that is £100.

I looked at old bank statements from my current account and found information about historic credit arrangements like the name of the business, the dates it started and ended, proof of direct debit payments, and sometimes a reference number, which I then used in my SAR letters or by simply phoning their customer services department. Hope this helps you in your search.

Claims companies don't do research on your behalf, they simply handle your complaint by forwarding it to the seller of the PPI.

You could write speculative SAR letters to any likely financial institutions but, as others have said, this could prove very expensive and there are no guarantees anything of use would be returned.

In addition, you cannot complain simply because you actually had PPI (if indeed you did). You need valid and (preferably) verifiable mis-selling complaint reasons which a SAR is unlikely to provide.
