    House purchased November 2013
    Original MF Date: January 2045 - £104,400
    Current MF Date: April 2030- £48,719. 75
  • Today has been lovely. The sun has been shining and it definitely puts everyone in a better mood :)

It's been OHs birthday today and also an NSD day. We have been out visiting people and had people over to visit us. Tonight we are going out for a meal but MIL is paying. It has been a great day that OH has really enjoyed.

Money saving goals for this week

Only do a top up shop. Plenty of food already in the house just need to get the basics, bread, milk and fruit.
Make 2 birthday cards instead of buying them. I have plenty of materials to do this.
Walk and share lifts to work when possible to save on fuel costs.

I hope you've all enjoyed your weekend :D

  • well done and good luck!
    Original mortgage £154,850 (2013)
    Mortgage now £148,370.15:beer:

    Original savings £0 (2013)
Savings now £3000 in ISA and premium bonds
£60 in mini savings pot, £600 in Xmas vouchers
  • Day 3 has been great. I have had the day off work and have got loads of housework done. The house was starting to resemble a tip and now looks much better :)

Money saving news. Did a top up shop today. OH came with me which wasn't great because his idea of a top up shop is completely different to mine. He was throwing things in the trolley left, right and centre..... argh. Still, it only came to £27 so under budget by £13 so that's heading to Febs OP pot which now stands at £99.....yippee :T

Looking forward to steak for tea. OH threw it in the trolley so now it's paid for I will enjoy it.

Off to update my signature now. Enjoy the rest of your day

  • Phew.....thank goodness those few days have passed, i've been so busy at work and home that I haven't had the time to post. On the plus side this does mean I haven't spent an awful lot.

    Money saving ways for the last few days have been;

Using a couple of left over Xmas vouchers to buy a birthday present so final cost only £4
Sharing lifts to work all week
    Lunch provided at work today
Cooking from scratch to use up all the fresh ingredients
Water bill came through and about £20 cheaper than expected

    The next few days I need to;

Make a birthday card for my friend
Do a grocery shop. I'm determined not to make this my downfall this week. I need lots including DW tablets, toilet paper and extra food to make a lovely meal for four at the weekend. Was hoping to keep it at around £40 but I think this might be a big challenge.

I am hoping that by payday, which is the middle of next week, I will hopefully have rounded my OP to £120 :T

Wishing you all a great Thursday

Welcome and good luck. Do you have a water hippo in your loo cistern to reduce water use per flush? A pint milk carton filled with water and with the lid on would do it.
  • Good morning all and thanks Alchemilla for the tip about the loo cistern.

Yesterday's trip to the supermarket was a success. I got everything from my list, nothing else, and it came to £37. I do allow £50 a week for groceries but recently I've been managing an average of £40 :T

I also took the time last night to go into my bank accounts and do some Tilly tidying. The result is extra money to pay towards this months OP which now stands at £120 :j

Having only starting this journey a week ago I can see hoe addictive it can become. I can also see how much if my money was being wasted on rubbish.

    It's finally Friday, enjoy :)

  • You are doing brilliantly.

I am trying to think of some advice to add to everything you are doing, but you know exactly what you are doing ..... Dish washer tablets if I want fancy brand one, I get in farm foods but if not very cheap then I use Lidls which are ooober cheap and work ok.

You know the hand wash bottles, I put my washing liquid (fairy one) in one of them and keep it by my sink in the kitchen and just use one squirt when washing up. I know it reduces how much I use cos I kept buying it at the same rate and ended up with 3 bottles stacked up in the cupboard.

I don't skimp on pressies or birthdays etc, although shop like it is the 70s rather than 2014 but I skimp every other area of my life to save a penny. I don't want to feel poor (cos I am not) nor do I want to talk about money all the time only when challenged by the kids etc about the cost of stuff, cos I want to attract wealth not poverty!!

Out of my friends I have the least income by far (Half of one of my friends and a third of the other one) but I am debt free which neither of them are, I have no money in my current account today but do not have an overdraft and I overpay my mort regularly. So I don't think you need to earn loads to overpay cos it is a mindset, a habit. You look at the way people live there lives on this website and food is being grown and made, crumbles and cakes are being made and unwanted goods from homes are sold on to people who need them to both parties gain - people are living more sustainably and saving a penny here or there but replacing it with time and love and that cannot be but good :) .

Best of luck brave traveller, you are not alone as you voyage.
Debt Sept 2012 £140,000 end age 65.5 (maximum) four mortgages in total
    April 2016 £114,599.83 (3 mortgages now)
Nil debt for some many years now perhaps 8. Need to save for a tent for holiday this year but nil else.
Over paying about £500 per month but fancy £600 so will have to think of some very money saving techniques...

  • Hello!
I too will be overpaying soon although I haven't made overpayments yet. I agree that the figure on you mortgage statement that says for every pound you borrow you repay x amount is a frightening one!
I've seen some posts on this board which ask why people would overpay. I'm overpaying because right now my OH and I are working ft and relatively comfortable for money, but you can't predict the future. I saw my parents have financial problems once they were late forties and they pretty much struggled onto retirement. It will be such a relief to know that the roof over your head is yours and that your safe if you lost your job etc. however, that's still a long way off for us!

Would like to add though, that until recently my ttitude would have been to overpay every penny I could find and it's not now. My father died last year, and my new attitude is you only live once so I intend to do plenty of fun things too! After all, you can't take it with you! Would be a bit sad to approach the pearly gates, look down from your cloud and say "well I worked like stink to pay my mortgage off."
