Can you stop this???

I have just had the door seal on my washing machine replaced, it was black with mould as was the powder drawer. When I did the laundry last week I ended up with black sticky deposits on some of the garments, so decided to bite the bullet and get the seal replaced.

I have just scrubbed the drawer out and the piece it fits in, I use a washing liquid from Aldi. I used to use cheap powder from Tesco mixed with washing soda, I am wondering whether to go back to using it again.

Any suggestions for keeping the seal and drawer in better condition.

  • Just wipe it with bleach now and again? I know they say it rots the rubber but if you rinse it it should be okay I think?

I put my washing liquid in a dosage ball inside the drum - the only thing that goes into the drawer is the fabric conditioner.

I remove the drawer about once a fortnight and give it a blast with my steamer - Polti one in my case, but any of them would do the trick.

I also use the Polti inside the casing where the drawer slides inside. Just give the machine an empty wash through with washing soda every now and again.

I don't use the drawer I put the washing liquid into the drum. Never had a problem with the seal but I wash the drawer if I have used fabric softener. Usually use tumble drier sheets.

I only put detergent in the drum. I don't like gunky drawers. Recently ive been using a fabric softener but weekly I take the drawer out to clean it.

Use vinegar in every wash and always leave drawer and door slightly ajar when not in use ;)

This. I had my last washing machine for about eight years and I never, ever had a mould problem in either the drawer or the drum, and all I ever really did was leave both the drawer and door open between uses. That an a monthly high temperature maintenance wash kept it looking like new.

yep, leave the door & the drawer slightly ajar after washing.

If you do use the drawer for powder, or liquid, pull it out regularly for washing & dry before replacing.

Rub a cloth around & into the grooves of the door seal to dry it after taking out washing.

I agree with leaving the drawer and door open for a while and also drying the drawer and seal out as well.

    It does help a lot.
  • Clean it out!
Take the drawer out and soak and wash in soapy water with a little bleach if you can or scrub with bleachy toothbrush if not.
Wipe around the seal very week too.

I HATE this, because when we moved into our house (rented) it had an intergrated washing machine, which has since broken.
It was black with mould and I had to scrub the whole thing at 38 weeks pregnant. Wasn't impressed AT ALL.
Who leaves their washing machine in such a state?!

Another user of soda crystals here. A scoop in every wash and a hot 'empty' wash once a month.
I don't suffer from slimy drawer any more since binning conditioner and using vinegar instead.
I read somewhere on this forum that you can put the drawer (minus front) in the dishwasher now and again. (I would use the top, as it doesn't maintain such a high temperature throughout the wash)
I keep forgetting to try it but maybe someone can confirm?
It sounds like a good idea as I always end up with cuts and scratches while trying to clean mine:(
