British Gas - all I want to do is sign up!!

Moved into a house that currently has gas supplied by British Gas.
Took a meter reading and just wasted 20 minutes doing the following:
1. Called BG customer services number. Every option I tried asked for a customer reference number, which I don't have. Tried staying silent but it just kept asking. Gave up.
2. Googled "British Gas new customer phone number" and found a different number. Called that. It again kept asking for my customer reference number. When I pressed * to say I didn't have one, it kept asking for the phone number on the account!
3. Googled again and found a number on their website for "sales". Called and spoke to someone there, but that line is just for if you want to SWITCH to British Gas. The person told me that the number I had in steap 2 above was correct, and I could keep pressing * to avoid having to enter customer details. She that pressing * repeatedly is a "trick".
4. Phoned the number again, pressed * lots and am now in a queue. Just been told the waiting time is 10 minutes.
Seriously?!!! Do they not want new business? It's a fking joke compared to other companies I've dealt with.
I'll be switching the gas away from BG as soon as humanly possible. :mad:
For anyone who moves in to a house supplied by British Gas, you can sign up with them by doing the following:

- Call 0800 048 0505
- Choose option 1
- Press * every time you're asked for any sort of account detail, until you get into the queue
