Help with noisy dvd playback in blu ray player

Options
I have a box set on DVD which when I play in my new Blu Ray player, plays quite noisy/grainy picture. Blu Rays seem to play fine but this particular dvd set has an issue. Is there a setting on the TV that I can adjust on my Panasonic HD TV or is the dvd quality just not great quality? I don't have any other dvds with me so I cant compare.

    Of course DVDs are going to look inferior to Blu-Ray, they are standard definition only.
    Blu-Ray players do "upscale" DVD, which does improve the picture to an extent, but DVDs cannot ever be made to appear High Definition if they are not.

    What is the DVD set if you don't mind me asking?

    DVD quality varies an awful lot depending on factors such as when the DVD was authored, who authored it, how many episodes are on the disc, and possibly most importantly, the original source material.

    I've got DVD's here that look almost blu-ray quality (and blu-rays that look like mid range DVD quality*), stuff that was from say the 80's TV series and recorded on tape originally tends to look pretty poor, especially if it's an early/budget DVD release**, but animation from a good film master can look very good.

    It's one of the reasons film fans will pay extra for Critereon releases, first on DVD, then on Blu-ray, as they would spend a lot of time getting the authoring as close to perfect as they could, and do away with extra features to increase the bit rate available for the actual feature.

    *I hate upscaled releases.

    **I've got a few DVD's where I bought the original release which turned out to have been mastered in composite, then a later release done in component or from a HD transfer.

    Its actually the Miami Vice box set circa 198something. I am not looking for Blu Ray quality as I appreciate its an old recording but the level of noise is quite high in my opinion. Shame I don't have a separate dvd player to compare.

    Your box set just sounds poorly authored. It's a full frame transfer of a TV show which was originally broadcast in 4:3 aspect ratio.

    DVD Active's review of the picture quality (written in 2005);
    "Universal Studios has presented Miami Vice: Season One in its televised aspect ratio of 1.33:1 fullscreen for its debut on DVD. There are several instances of pops and artefacts as a result of dirt or scratches on the prints, grain is prevalent in a number of scenes, especially darker ones, and at times the image is soft and blurry. The colour also seems to be a bit muted and seems darker than it really ought to be in many shots, while the quality of the image differs slightly from episode to episode"

    I very much doubt watching it through a Dvd Player (rather than Blu-Ray) will make any significant difference for the better.

    Thanks for the info, maybe I was expecting a bit too much. I'll stick to watching it on my tablet!!
