Hi guys

Took out the EuropAssist policy for around £40 ish last year and been fine.

I had to use it once to change a spare tyre as my car didn't come with a jack when I bought it.

Got a letter from them today saying renewal is £80.....

So now looking for someone else. Still not sure about Autoaid to be honest so would rather go for one where everything's already included.

Do have some Tesco CC vouchers hanging about but the missus wants them towards a holiday.:(

Any other cheapish suggestions? - I guess I would like Home Start too (just in case)....

WJUK

ps - I have an MG so I NEED decent breakdown cover....

Yes quite interesting reading but Europe Assist doesn't seem to be mentioned.

Was tempted by the "First Call" one but it seems a few people have had bad stories/experiences with them.

Anyone else able to offer some advice?

A long way from home, I was locked out of the car when the central locking malfuntioned. Called Autoaid who arrived 40 minutes later, fixed the problem and all I had to do was sign that I was happy with the job. To my surprise no money was wanted. It made renewal for £34 recently quite an easy decision to make.

I'm with first call through Halifax and got a perfectly satisfactory service when I broke down the other week. I was told the mechanic should be with me within an hour and they would call me if there was a delay, but a local breakdown lorry turned up promptly after about forty minutes. There was a problem with the connector on the throttle cable, he fixed my car at the roadside improvising with a spring and some cable ties. :) I was quite impressed, as some companies will send out a van and then you have to wait for a truck if you need one, whereas had I needed it I wouldn't have had to wait.

I'm not sure about the 'onward travel' though - when I mentioned I wanted to be taken to my destination if it couldn't be fixed at the roadside, they seemed concerned I might be less than halfway to my destination (I was just under half way), so although they didn't say so, I got the impression they may have taken me back home again. In all fairness that might be in the t&c, but I'm not sure where I put my documents to be honest so I can't check.

I'm afraid I had a poor experience with First Call on Saturday. My car started overheating so i rang them (on the motorway). Someone turned up 3 HOURS later (bearing in mind i was also a lone female. Priorities?!). And he was just there to tow my car away, not to try and fix it. He told me that he had said to them he was really far from me and that there must be someone nearer, but they didn't listen. He also told me that they pay recovery companies such poor rates that most garages etc don't want anything to do with them, which is probably why he was the nearest to me who actually said yes to them.

Complete rubbish. Will probably go with the RAC/AA next time - more money but at least they're reliable.
