Barclays Credit Problem

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and looking for the best way of dealing with a problem i have come across when obtaining my credit report.
I have 1 item on my credit report which is from barclays bank for around £6000 which i am completely unaware of, with a caveat.
When i was a student, i had a barclays bank account with an overdraft. when i ceased being a student and was working full time i was reducing this overdraft.
around 12 years ago, i was made unemployed. My benefits were paid in to this account, and were swallowed by the overdraft. I obtained a copy of the statutory notice advising that they could not retain all of the monies that were paid, as the monies were paid for me to be able to live.
Barclays reluctantly paid me the money retaining the then statutory £16 allowed by law, but advised that they were going to close the account there and then. at this point i was around £800 overdrawn.
I never received confirmation of the account closure in writing or any letters detailing how to repay the overdraft. to this date i have never received a single letter from barclays regarding this matter.
Recently when applying for my credit file, this came to light, and it seems that for the last 12 years they have been applying charges to my account each month and applying default notices.
I am now looking to get a mortgage, and know this will affect my ability to do so. I dont have £6000 to pay, and certainly do think i should do so anyway due to the fact that i have not once been made aware of the situation.
Furthermore, should they not have taken some sort of legal action well before this time rather than just let this debt for which i was completely unware build up?
What action should i be taking?
Any help would be very appreciated, as i am looking to get this matter cleared up as soon as possible so that me and my family can settle down in a house of our own.
Thanks,
Dan.

Hi
Is this definitely the same debt?
Does the account entry have a default date field and if so what date is in that field? or is it just showing missed payment markers for many years?
Given the age of this debt then it sounds like the debt should have dropped off your credit file by now, and sounds like it would probably be statute barred by now.
Likely the best answer will be to write to complain but what to write depends on what exactly shows currently.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
This issue is, that the debt increases every month so it shows as current on the credit file, and presumably has for 12 years.0

So is the account status not showing as defaulted?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0

I just joined credit expert as i could not retrieve my statutory report again as i had lost the pin given. and none of this appears on my credit file now. Seems a little odd that only a few months ago it was there and now its not.0

Check Equifax & Noddle as well."You know when it's cold outside when you go outside and it's cold"0
