Install by Retailer or use local Company

I am using a new thread for this as I am keen to get swift answer I have bought a new TV from John Lewis mainly because of the 5 year guarantee.
I need to have the TV tuned in etc John Lewis are not able to deliver and do this until the 7th March Cost £55
I have looked online as advised by the person at JL and got a response from a local person through a web site Filled in a request there was no contact no. Adam the chap who called me said that this is a referral web site to local persons.
He has said that he could come on the day of delivery (which could be next Wednesday if delivery only ) He will set it up do the things stated in the JL install . I want to move the current TV to my bedroom I think it will just be move it and plug it in I imagine. I already have a TV in that room.
He first of all quoted £140 but I don't need a wall fitting and I said this was too expensive He then said he would do everything for £80 and could do it immediately When I said I did not have the TV he said he could do it and move the TV and I asked if he would do everything for the £80. I need to call him back with the delivery details I did call another company and they quoted £45 plus VAT They are busy but could do it later next week.
I need to call JL and cancel the install The email confirmation states that the payment for the TV will only come out of my bank account when it leaves the warehouse. It should not present any problem cancelling this
Advice Many thanks Sue

On the face of it £80 is OTT

£45 sounds about right but TBH it's a very easy job to do yourself
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Installing (tuning) a TV is very easy.

Do you not have any friends that could help you move things?

If you're going to the trouble of moving your old TV into another room & plugging the cables in, why do you need to pay someone an extortionate amount of money to do exactly the same for your new TV?

I physically would not be able to move the TV on my own so therefore moving it is important to me. Also with the new TV being a smart TV connecting to the internet WiFi etc and I am not able to connect the video as someone was here to put in a new aerial in the building I live in They connected the blu ray player but not the Video recorder I am not able to do this despite trying
I don't want to ask my SIL or Daughter as they make me feel it is so much trouble for them and they are busy. I could wait forever on them doing it also so I just don't ask them to do anything anymore. I know it seems like a lot of money BUT at least it would be done. If my Son was here he would do it no trouble. My daughter is touchy so don't want to rock the boat
Thanks for your advice Would you leave it to JL and wait until 7th March. ?

  • You dont say what the delivery date is if you dont get them to fit it to be able to judge how much of a wait this is.

On the face of it £45 + vat isnt that bad for a call out and 30 minute job (obv the call out adds most the cost) but as others have said its a very basic job to do if all the wall sockets are already in place as its little more than plugging in wires and running the auto setup programme.

You mention the challenges with your family but do you not have any friends or neighbours that could help? I did the chaps next door in exchange for a couple of beers as the "official" guy who delivered his TV had done it in a very sub optimal way

ask your daughter, touchy or not, it's such a basic thing for an offspring to do for their parents.

There is nothing complicated at all about tuning a tv in, plug it into aerial, scan, save, done.

or connecting it to wifi, if you do infact need the smart tv functions, which I imagine in the vast majority of households are rarely used after the first "I wonder what this will do" investigation.

I am elderly and live in a Retirement Property I am one of the youngest and whilst I do have friends here I am the one who usually has to help others. Most like me will pay for a service like this it is the price you pay for growing old.
I do appreciate all the advice you have given I did book the installation with JL and will leave it for now and think about it.
Once again many thanks to everyone.
