What happens to my Smart Meter if I switch?
I've been with British Gas for a few years for both Gas and Electricity.
A couple of years ago, BG came and fitted a Smart Meter. They also supplied me with a portable device that I plug into the mains and it gives me readouts of gas/elec used for the day and cumulative readings.
It seems this is the only way that I can tell how much gas/elec I have used.
The online tariff I was on with BG expired Jan 31st 2014 and I am now on their standard tariff.
I'm now thinking of switching to Scottish Power and I'm wondering what will happen to my portable meter.
Will BG want it back? - it has the BG logo on it. If not, are BG likely to charge me if I keep it.
If BG take it back what would Scottish Power provide me with to read my gas/elec usage?
Thanks in advance

The smart will stop working, and become a standard dumb meter.
I doubt BG will ask for anything back.0 -
You can continue to read the actual meters.
You just have to press the odd button on the meter to get it to display. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks for replying.
Penrhyn- The electric meter does give a constant meter reading display of elec used.
However, the gas meter has a button A and a button B and a label saying 'Press button A until index is displayed then press button B'
I do this and the display only shows the words 'Credit On'.
No numbers indicating gas usage are shown. The only way I can see my gas usage is by looking at the portable device.
Any thoughts?0 -

Thanks for the info sacsquacco.
Your suggestion worked!
Can someone who had a Smart Meter when they switched from British Gas to Scottish Power tell me if there were any problems and did the portable device continue working?
Thanks0 -
I ve switched from Bg with an electric smart meter to Npower, no problems so far. I ve just switched the monitor back on and it shows kwhr usage and reading but not the tariff. It can t calculate usage in money as it does nt know what tariff I m on. The monitor is still better than the usual energy monitors you can buy, its very accurate and quick0

HaHaHa, aren't you always telling us how good the smart meters are, and now you switch away from it.
I thought you would stick with BG so you could have the staff discount.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
