Need urgent help please re router

Hi I am on virgin media cable broadband 15meg and I want to buy a router so my daughter can use her laptop at same time. She has a wireless card already in her laptop and a receiver thing which looks like a usb bar. I however do not have wireless on my pc.

So my 1st question is this... If I buy a router will it be able to still plug into the pc with a cable or will I too have to buy some kind of wireless card? I would prefer to still have my pc hard wired into the cable as I do not need to move the pc around the house and I do not need extra expence etc.

my 2nd question is..... I have been told that netgear is very good with cable modems or belkin but which one should I go for, I am on a tight budget and don't really want to spend much more than £50 but can go a little higher. Also I am disabled so it needs to be a very very easy install, basically need something which is plug and play, I can follow step by step on screen stuff but cant do any technical wiring etc.

I do hope someone can assist me, sorry to be a wuss again when it comes to technology. Oh any links to a good proved router which would be right for us would be appreciated.

you can have 1 pc wired and one wireless yes, this is the setup i have at the mo

1. You need a wireless cable/DSL router. These also have Ethernet ports to connect a computer via Ethernet cable.

2. There are cheaper makes which will do the same job, but Netgear are a good make with good support if you need it - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/48546

I am on Virgin (Ex telewest) too. Last weekend I got a wireless router kit from Tesco. It was £55 and included a wireless USB dongle to use on another computer if you wish. However, you don't have to use it. The kit was quite easy to set up, but what impressed me most was the tech support I got from philips. Of the small problems I had setting up the wireless router, the technical support guys (020 number) at philips were fantastic, and answer the call within 3 rings EVERY TIME. This is excellent customer service.!

For your info, I have my main pc wired to the router via the Lan 1 socket at the back. My lap top is wireless.

Tesco stuff used to be Linksys.

The £35 Netgear one Chippy linked to is a good router, if you need help setting it up, come here when you get it.

Provided you have an ethernet socket on your PC, it is plug and play, you remove the cable from the back of the PC, plug that into the router, put another cable from router to PC, and you are done.

The only slightly fiddly bit is setting up the wireless encryption, but there is help here if you need it.

You don't need to spend £55 to get it working.

Hi is the ethernet socket the blue cable one? I have a blue cable going into back of pc from the Virgin media modem it looks like a large telephone cable but its blue. Would I have to buy another cable or would the netgear come with the cable you said I'd need to put from the router to my pc?

yes the blue cable, (not usb), the routers come with a cable

I am interested in this one, would this do the same as the netgear?
