Moving House

Hi everyone,

I'm moving house in a few weeks and was wondering what my options as far as Gas & Elec was concerned. We are currently paying Scottish Power for Elec and Scottish Gas for gas. We pay approx £20 a week power, and £40 a week for gas. (its alot!!) We have prepayment meters for both and are paying off some previous debts, which would explain the high payment.

The new flat has been fed for both power and gas by Scottish Hydro and we like the idea of switching to them as pay monthly and no prepayment meter charges. The question is, is it possible to switch? And do we need to give the previous suppliers any meter readings or get them to remove the meters from the old flat for the next tenants?

Thanks

You will automatically have a deemed contract with Scottish Hydro when you move in. You should contact them the day or second day you move in with the meter reads and to pay by direct debit (this will save you £7 per month on the standing charges on the Standard tariff).

You can then look around to see what price tariffs are at your new postcode and choose one to suit.

The prepayment meters at the old flat are the new tenants' business - no need to become involved. You should, however, take meter reads when you leave and tell the suppliers as you can claim any credit back (although you appear to still have debt - this will have to be repaid. As you do not have an account with them in your new property you should work out how much this is and how you are going to pay it.)

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sounds good :) How though, do I "see what price tariffs are at your new postcode and choose one to suit". I dont know how to go about this?

    Thanks
