no power to washing machine problem

I have a Bosch washer dryer and a couple of weeks ago I noticed that it wasn't spinning properly and called in my usual repair man. He said there was nothing wrong, and maybe I just thought the clothes seemed unusually wet, but maybe I was mistaken, so he left without charging me.

I did a few more loads, clothes still seemed too wet so I was planning to call repair man again. However yesterday my machine suddenly stopped working. The problem now is that there doesn't seem to be any power reaching the machine, I 've plugged something else into the washing machine socket and that works, so the socket is fine, I've plugged the washing machine into an extension cable to a different socket, but it's still dead and I;ve just changed the plug fuse, still nothing.

When I had problems before people on here were great and diagnosing the likely problem, so I knew whether this was an easy or an expensive fix and wonder if there are any suggestions this time? Is it likely the two faults are connected, or just a co incidence? Are electrical problem with white goods terminal or likely to be easily repaired?

Any help or advice would be very welcome. I've tried calling my man but can't get through, but it seems unlikely that whatever happens he won't be able to come until next week now as I can't get a day off work until Thursday.

Trying to read between the lines I would say that the root cause could be that the machine is not, or has not been emptying properly. This would probably give rise to it's not drying properly

I'm intreagued that you say you have no power to the machine. Are you sure you have no power or could your machine simply be doing nothing?

Before you get the repair man out again. I suggest you try the following:

    Unplug the machine completely
Empty all the water out that you can. There is probably a removable filter at the front. This will drain the drum. Check for blockages etc.
Check the outlet hose and the drain it goes into for blockages
Reinstate connections and try running it again.

If you really are getting no power to it then it sounds quite serious, as you've already replaced the fuse etc. The next thing to go would be the program selector.

Having said that there are those on here who could help you more.

Thanks for that. There is no water in the machine at all, there never was the clothes just seem too wet to be spun. The only way I could describe it was like spinning towels on the low spin option where the machine spins, the water drains away but the towels are still wet enough to almost be wrung out.

The power problem must just be a co incidence. I have an oprating light on the front of the machine and that is not lit. It doesn't matter what I try..the machine is completely dead.

I've just phoned the repair man, he is very cross as he says it souds like another false goose chase as the machine was fine on Tuesday and can't just have died..but he's coming this afternoon to try it and see if I am right.

  • I would say the problem could be the motor brushes. If these wear out it means the motor cant get enough power to spin the drum and this results in the clothes being very wet at the end of the cycle. When the brushes wear out the motor can work intermittantly and if the machine is empty it might appear that the machine works normally because the motor doesn't have to work as hard.

If this is the problem it is easily fixed however, this should have been easily spotted by your repair man.

You dont say how you know the machine isn't getting power. Is it because the drum isn't spinning or is there some other indication such as a power light?

The machine has 2 power lights, neither are lit. Just in case it was a problem bulb on the front panel of the machine I've tried running the machine regardless but nothing happens.

As I mentioned in my erlier post I have tried another appliance in the same socket and that was fine, and have changed the fuse on the plug.

I'm not very happy at the moment, I've piles of washing everywhere and son comes home from uni tomorrow with more black sack loads. :(
