SKYPE -Phone -to- Phone

I have trawled Google, and Skypes own site, but cant find the answer. I think the terms are too antonymous for the search engines.

I'm currently researching new home phone & broadband providers (paying Talktalk far too much for add-ons, (mobile boost, international boost etc.)),

I've signed up for the free month on Skype, and will probably cancel and move to 'top up credit'. as the monthly subscription isn't cost effective for my usage.

My plan is to keep the Canadian numbers I have on my landline handset, and save the Skype numbers to my Andriod.

From what I understand, I should disable the internet on the Andriod to avoid using my data allowance. I am not interested in video chat.

My question is, (please excuse my ignorance) when making Skype calls from my mobile, will my MOBILE contract inclusive minutes be used? I don't think they will but I want to confirm before I commit to a landline/broadband contract I am tied into.

Many Thanks

Skype calls will be as data, and not the minutes from your mobile contract.

So as you say stick to wifi connection unless you have an unlimited data allowance on the mobile (I have 3 one plan and use facetime & Skype over 3g all the time)..

Ive never paid a penny for Skype calls in that I only do Skype to Skype, and facetime is free all the time..

What you need is the people you call to be on Skype then it would always be free..

Not sure why you are overcomplicating matters?
  • Thanks,
Thats exactly what I wanted to confirm. We're in the middle of nowhere, with a pitiful internet connection. It seems to make more sense for us to pay for Skype 'top-ups' now and then, than rely on an unreliable internet connection. -Cant even watch on-demand, catch-up nor i-player. ;(

Have you considered switching to another phone provider? Voip is okay if you have a decent broadband connection.

If you still want broadband you will still need a landline provider, so look for a better deal on that and that could include free calls and even free calls to some countries as part of the package. I think that should be your first priority. Skype can be used on any provider.

  • Yes, thanks. Looking up every alley.

If you have any inclusive minutes landline or mobile you can call Canada out of them at no extra charge via https://www.callstunt.com 0161 geographical number.

Some landline deals include free or low cost calls to certain countries. You might need to add an additional bundle but if it covers other things that you want it can be worthwhile.

  • Thanks for all your replys. Like I said in my original post, I just wanted to check I wouldn't be using inclusive minutes when calling international via Skype.

I'm looking at every option with all the providers, to get us the very best value for money.

Currently, and I'm sure like many families we have various mobile contracts (probably better on a family contract,), and a landline/broadband package with add ons. None of which are being fully utilised.
