thank you for the helpful replies,

only problem is i dont know the company, its through an agency

i wrote this paragraph earlier and sent it to the agent for review:

I want to pursue my career as an underwriter in the insurance sector as the varied day-to-day duties are very appealing to me. Reviewing applications for insurance coverage, determining the risk involved and calculating the appropriate premiums for the coverage requested would all develop and utilise my analytical flair.

    to which the agent said:

    "
Maybe a little more in-depth, as I said doesn’t need to be an essay but I am wanting to convey that you are serious about going down the route of underwriting.
    "

im not quite sure how i can show enthusiasm for the insurance/underwriting career without just saying why i would enjoy/be good at the duties involved in the role?
the agent knows im studying CII so they obviously need more

    thanks

Don't really see what else they expect you to say. It's a bit weird to my mind, that they're not telling you who the company is. They normally do if you are being put forward to the interview stage. How can you answer that question properly, if you don;t know?

It's not like most people dream of being an underwriter when they're young, is it?
Yes, it's a job that suits some people's skills, using statistics, how they work, etc. And I'm sure it can be interesting.
But what else can you say - really?
Besides, underwriters don;t need to have the gift of the gab. Agency seem to be putting unnecessary stumbling blocks in the way,

I'd tell the agency guy to write it himself on my behalf if he knows how to correctly convey the required message
  • Sounds like the agent recruits for lots of different types of role and has some sort of sell yourself at all costs attitude.

Humour him and add a few platitudes about the company you're going to and the challenges and ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Just to add, they're obviously putting you forward. It will be your cv that gets you to the next stage with the prospective employer.

I'd say it is a risk to be too fawning - that can come across as a**e licking - I'd say some interviewers take exception to that.

Be honest - and say why you want the role. If you're attracted to the actual companyfor whatever reason, and not just the job you'd be doing then by all means say so and why - but I wouldn;t do it too shamelessly.
I know and some don't. I got turned down for an interview last year as I didn't do enough !!!! licking and she even quoted someone else's application to me showing me how cheesy they were. It was desperate what they had wrote.

but as i dont know the company it is (as its through an agency) can someone share how i can :

    - be more in depth
    - and show im serious about an underwriting career

what else can i add or change to this:

I want to pursue my career as an underwriter in the insurance sector as the varied day-to-day duties are very appealing to me. Reviewing applications for insurance coverage, determining the risk involved and calculating the appropriate premiums would all develop and utilise my analytical flair.

I feel that this role and opportunity within your organisation would allow me to develop my skills and gain valuable experience in the insurance sector.
My professional goal is to become an ACII qualified underwriter.

So an advert for a job via an agency is asking you to write why you want to work there?

That is near on impossible as you have no idea who they are.

Underwriting is all about modelling risk I would think mentioning this and being able to do it is key to a long term career in the sector.
