Help with used car purchase

I'm looking at closing the purchase on a Peugeot 207 (08). I'm trying to keep costs low. There is 3-month warranty. Would you buy the 1 year or 2 year warranty at all from the used car garage? I've never before bought a warranty on a used car before.

Also one thing it appears the car has had a service every two years. I used to put my old car (2003) in for a service every year - was I overdoing it? I mainly do short mileage and liked the peace of mind of a service...

There is one stamp missing from one of the services that this new car has had and they're chasing this up or looking to get it stamped. It's a reputable garage I'm buying from and they are happy with the cars service history. They've done their own service on the car since it's come in. Am I ok buying and taking the car away while they chase up this stamp?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I suspect if you buy and leave them to make this stamp magically appear you'll never see it.

Also, why has it only been serviced every two years? You haven't been over doing it and arguably have actually been underdoing it by only servicing once a year if you only do low miles.

Is this car a particularly goodprice as with the servicing and lack of stamps I'd be looking for a different one, can't imagine 207s are hard to come by so I'd be looking for one that has the service history up to date without the need for any'chasing'.

Warranty will be next to useless so don't bother with an extended one.

Different cars have different service intervals, and some had a 2 year or x miles interval (though I haven't found confirmation it applies to this one). You'd need to check the handbook.

I wouldn't worry too much about the stamp, since if they are chasing it up there's probably paperwork to show it's been done, or you can confirm independently with that garage.

On a 6 year old car I probably wouldn't touch a warranty since I suspect it's unlikely to cover much (almost everything will be down to wear and tear rather than mechanical fault), but I'd check the exclusions carefully before deciding.

Used car warranty worth as much as a bag of hamster bedding.

Dont rely on it. Your buying a 5 / 6 year old car so there wont be much left that wont be down to wear and tear.

    Very little will be covered.

Forget the warranty, They are not worth the paper they are written on (unless they are manufacturer warranties, which this one isn't)

Servicing is important, especially if you are only doing short journeys. Regular oil changes etc.

Servicing, even if it hasn't been done, they will probably just get the book stamped - anything for a sale.

I'd probably walk away and find another one. its not a rare car. Plenty out there will have been serviced every year and have a properly stamped service history

/edit - after looking, it appears the service intervals for that year were every 2 years of 12,500 miles for diesels and every 2 years or 20k for petrol. I still think servicing should be every year but make sure the interim services have been done: http://www.servicing.peugeot.co.uk/peugeot-interim-service/

If its been serviced at the intervals recommended don't be put off by people on here who think they know better.
  • If its been serviced at the intervals recommended

But it hasn't as it's missing one :) "They are looking to get it stamped" implies to me that they will just get the book stamped regardless.

Or that it's been done but not stamped; my local won't stamp the book unless you leave it out. I'd be looking for other proof that it was done though i.e. a receipt or a print out from the servicing garage.

What has the service intervals got to do with wear and tear and a warranty?

Even if a car had been serviced at half the scheduled figures at the main dealer and you say fix everything. It will still have wear and tear items after 4/5 years.

  • I can't see anywhere that anyone mentioned wear and tear? of course it will need tyres, brakes, shocks etc

I was more referring too whether the purchase would be a good deal. I say no, but then having had previous experiences of Peugeot (and a friends, which was a nightmare) I can't say I would buy one again but that is my opinion.
