best prog for fast downloading from ftp free

before i start its a friends ftp of their videos, not torrents or rubbish like that!
i downloaded dap, at first, it sped it up from 24kbps to 50kbps, but the last 2 i did are abysmal, only 15kbps so it took about 4 or 5 hours fluctutation to get a 186 mb file, which is terrible!
i have a 1 meg adsl broadband connection, can anyone recommend a FREE prog which could significantly speed up the downloads? please?!

    I second that, I use Flashget all the time for all downloads. Much better than windows IE etc inbuilt downloader.

    ive tried it but its only going up to 24kbps which is what dap was going up to when i removed it :( any ideas?

    running the bt test gives me 825 kilo bits per second (Kbps) as a download speed so how come i can only download maximum from internet sites/ftp's 24kbps? confused!
