Windows slowly Backing up to external hard drive

pls can anyone advise
i have windows 7
and and external hard drive that i use to back it on to once a month
but it can take hours to do (usually run it overnight) is this the norm
all i do is click computer control panel /system security/ back up your computer and it sends it to the external hard drive and it always seems to back up bigger then the main c drive too
is this is quickest and best way of doing this or is there an external programme anyone can recommend to do this ?
