Dulux Trade versus DIY store Dulux

Hi peeps, is there anyone out there who can tell me the difference between dulux trade centre paint (approx £40-42 5l tin) and the homebase/b&q dulux - same colour for £26 5l tin?
Have just had whole downstairs skimmed and am about to go for it paint wise!
thankyou.......

I been told the trade is a much thicker paint so will last longer. We used Trade weathershield exterior paint on our rendering on the outside

Ooh, I was always led to believe that the trade paint was thinner as professionals find it much easier to work with.

I wait with baited breath to see which is right :o
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

  • Just to say thank you to skid 112 - doh if I had a brain I might be dangerous!!! If only I'd thought to check myself. Thankyou. We arenow plodding on with painting with diy store dulux so see how we go.
    Thanks.
  • Can anyone advise me whether Dulux make paint for B & Q as there is a difference of £20.00 between the two brands for a 10 ltr tin and as we will need approx 4-6 tins it will be a big difference in price.
I tried on the old thread below but it doesn't work now

if dulux did make paint for b+q which i'm fairly sure they don't - it probably wouldn't be as good as trade , therefore it probably won't last as long so will need doing sooner - costing you more money in the long run , if you're not intending to stay in the house for morethan 3-4 year - get the b+q , if you're planning staying long term , go with dulux trade stuff

dulux diy stuff is made so that it can be used straight from the tin , where as trade can be thinned if required

Trade has a much higher pigment content, advantages being thicker and colour lasts much longer. Been using Dulux Trade for years and in my opinion it's the best on the market. Retail Dulux or crown are ok. You may end up applying more than 2 coats if going for the cheapo stuff.

give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • Paul hit the nail on the head, Dulux trade is a far superior paint to the Dulux Retail paint you get in DIY sheds. As mentioned trade has a higher pigment content, which is the most expensive part of the formula.

Many well known brands do produce paints for DIY stores to mark as 'own brand' but the formula's are different so don't be fooled in to thinking that it is the same product re-branded, in the big scheme of things £20 is money well spent to get a good finish. As somebody in the trade I can source many different trade products at many different price points, Dulux trade paints are some of the more expensive but I believe in their products so use them almost exclusively even though I could use a different brand and save money.
