Shop Chasing Failed Payment Over a Year Ago

Hi guys

Looking for some advice...

I purchased two console tables a year ago via shops website. Tables arrived fine after short stock delay.

Have now received two emails from shop a year later now claiming that the payment failed and chasing for outstanding money.

Can't see that far back on my online banking, and know that during this period that we moved house - so transaction history is likely to be a nightmare to trace. I'm sure if I'd notice if I was £1000+ better off than expected.

Just wondering what rights the shop has to trace payment after all this time? I'm also surprised the shop would issue goods without ensuring payment beforehand, as being a big store this is their usual policy.

Thoughts appreciated.

You need to show them that you paid. They clearly have evidence you have not (or lack of evidence of a payment)

Surely you have the date you bought/got them. Surely if, like you say, this is a £1000 transaction, you can find a payment to this retailer for this amount. yes you may have lots of transactions, but surely not £1000 to this specific retailer?

Just get up the statements and prove you paid. They have 6 years to chase you for payment if indeed payment was not taken.
  • I do believe it's quite a few years (6??) they are entitled to seek missed payments.

So I think they are within their rights unfortunately.

Ar your sure? With most online banks you can retrieve historic transactions going back a number of years, also there's nothing stopping you contacting the bank directly. How did you pay (or not) in the first place?

Why would moving house cause a transaction history nightmare ? A call to your bank will confirm whether the payment was taken. It's not that difficult really.

You still have to pay, you have the goods.

Barclays only let you go back three or six months, unless you opt for paperless statements. It's pretty useless, but the call centre know this is a problem and will happily look back further for you.
  • How hard is it, really?
Ring bank, ask to trace transaction, job done.

No you won't get out of paying for them. :)
