Benefits and being offered temporary job

A few facts to help:
- My husband left me a few weeks ago
- I have two children aged 1 and 2 years
- I am not working
- Last Friday I applied for IS, HB and CTC. My claims are going through but I do not yet receive anything.

My question:
I have today been offered a temporary job working week by week for a maximum 16 hours a week. If I take this job will it effect my benefits? It will pay £8 per hour.

I'd like to take this job until I can find full time work but don't want to if it means I lose everything else because that will mean I can't afford to pay the bills.

Thanks in advance.

it would wipe out any income support, but probably have little affect on housing or council tax benefit.
you would still get maximum/near maximum child tax credits.
if it lasts you would be able to claim wtc if you worked at keast 16 hours a wek.
wtc would affect housing and council tax support, but wouldnt totally wipe them out

Thanks - I think they could drop 1 hour so hopefully I'd be OK if I worked 15 hours a week.

you syill wouldny hry any income support because earnings would remove entitlement.
you can only earn £20 before they start removing income support $ for £, so you would have no entitlement once you earn £91 a week
  • Hugs tinka you're going through a lot at the moment hun xx

Can you get to a Citizen's Advice Bureau for an appointment so they can advise you - eg is your husband giving you any money etc etc? When my marriage ended I was able to claim Legal Aid but I'v got no idea at all how that works now due to all the cuts etc.

All our situations are a bit different so it would be good to get professional advice if possible

  • Thanks Hummingbird. It's all rather confusing at the moment and hard to work out what to do for the best. My husband is going to pay maintenance and happy for me to stay in the house so that takes the pressure off a bit.

I just want to be able to get a permanent job so I can get on with life and be able to support my girls.

Appreciate your advice - I may just g and chat to them.

    xx
