disassociation of debt

I moved into a property 3yrs ago , the guy who lived there before me has run up a debt of around 50,000 pounds which is obviously registered on the address, having tried to get credit and have my prepayment removed has proved a fruitless task and im reaching the end of my tether
I rang equifax and experian and got no joy at all after being told theres nothing I can do as im not linked financially with this person.
any help advice would be appreciated

  • Credit ratings are per person, not over address.

His debts should not be impacting you.

Have you checked your credit file? It might be something else preventing you getting credit.

Prepayment? You mean the won't let you switch your utility meters back to a standard credit account?

Get a statutory copy of all your credit reports, Experian, Equifax and CallCredit. If for some reason this person has been associated with you it will be on your reports and easy to remove via the CRA's.

Are you on the Electoral role? Have you ever had any financial credit accounts of your own? Including mobile phone contracts?

In regards to the prepayment meter, not really sure on this, if you are paying your bill and have no arrears then not sure why they wouldnt replace it? Maybe call them and ask for specific reason why they can't.
