Web Page Design / Writing

Options
Hi all,

I wanted to have a look at writing/designing my own web pages - more as a hobby than a job (at least at first). What program would be best to get? I have looked at W3C and done some reading through the courses, etc last year.

If you've been going through the W3C courses, can I assume you've been doing things by hand, and not using a WYSIWYG style application?

If the above is the case, you couldn't go too far wrong with Notepad++

I'd also back recommendations for Notepad++ - free download, keyword highlighting and a few other bits and pieces. I'd also recommend that if you've been reading through the W3C courses and learning how to do this "by hand", that you stick with it. It can be longer when you're starting, but you'll gain an understanding for how everything works (and doesn't work) that a WYSIWYG page editor will usually hide from you.

Best advice would be to think of a web site you'd like to create, and try to create it - I always find that trying to do an actual task will teach you much more than working through exercises ever will. If you want it to be interactive and use something like PHP and a database, you can download WAMP to run on your PC, which includes a web server, database server and enough to make it act like a real web server (as opposed to just double-clicking your html files in IE to open them).

Also I can recommend www.sitepoint.com as a web developer site. Based in Australia it has a lot of articles, some paid learning sections (I haven't tried them), and a very comprehensive forum. A lot of reading matter, I stress I'm not linked to that site, just a fairly long-time user of it.

I would echo that recommendation. I have been a member there since October 2002. :)

(I would post my actual username, but when I have done so in the past the MSE forum police have accused me of self-promotion and deleted those posts. s*tegur* should be enough of a clue). :D

Ah, I recognise that name. I don't have to post mine from there, as it's the same on here. I can't get close to 2002 though.
