From what I've heard (not used myself, sorry) the old saying rings true; you get what you pay for.

Spend a couple of quid and get more speed, more storage, more flexibility... just more.

I've used them for a few sites.

Get the occasional down time i.e. site not found.

But more recently a pop up advert is appearing on every page (browser dependent).

But what can I expect for free!!!

I've been using this outfit for the past couple of years. http://www.icdsoft.com
The economy plan comes without enough features for most people.

For ease of use you can't beat http://www.squarespace.com but it does cost a bit more.

If you get your domain elsewhere, such as http://www.hover.com then you have the freedom to point your domain elsewhere if you fall out with your hosting provider.
  • Hosting really doesn't cost very much. I use one.com and have no complaints about them.

I've used these guys for my paid services and not had any problems yet.

£14 a year or £12 a year if you sign up for 2 years.

I used a free webhost (zoka.cc)... It works fine (although there are a few limitations). However, I noticed once when I put a mis-typed link onto one of the pages, instead of displaying a "page not found" message, I was re-directed to a page attempting a drive-by-download to install malware on my PC.

There is something very dodgy about the host's business model! But (so long as I don't put any invalid links on my pages) it seems to work fine. There's support for scripting and databases, etc.

There's no way I'd use a free host for anything remotely important or work-related, though...
  • Free hosting is a big NO, pay and get better speed, better space and security above all. Lose your pocket.. there are no free lunches.
