Tax credits Help

Hi, I am just looking for a some advise on working tax credits please?
Up until xmas were receiving both child tax and working tax. My other half is self employed and working 40 hours a week but just after xmas these hours went down to 22. So I phoned taxed credits informed because I was redundant just before this so we lost the working tax credits ( i knew that would happen )
So I phoned them yesterday to inform them yesterday as his hours are back up to 40. I asked them if we are know entitled to working tax?
They said no as based is on last years income, however last years income was 30,000 ( my other half lost his job last year hence the self employment) this 1st year of buisness he is not earning anything as he had to reinvest into it. so income for him is 0 and mine is 4,000.
I pretty sure this isnt right from what Ive read on the internet! The whole income disregard would this years total income up to 6,500

Thank you! Yes I did they have the correct fiqures to date,once I find a new job I will update it accordingly. The man on the phone was adamant we were not entitled to them though. I might phone them again later.
