Hi does anyone have experience of a similar system to the bravura/belkin easy transfer cables as seen on amazon, but cheaper. Or other cheap solutions to getting info directly from one pc to another without using a pendrive/external hard drive/DVD?
Cant post a link, sorry, but a google
" bravura belkin easy transfer cables "
turns up info

You can just connect them directly by their network sockets, by using an ethernet crossover cable ... can be bought for about a pound or two on Amazon.
Or if they are both able to connect to the same router, by wireless or wired connection, just share the files you want and move them across via the network (no cost at all).0 -
Thanks. I seem to remember having a crossover cable to use with an old router. I think it was red but having just googled it find they come in all sorts of colours...so does it have particular info written on it? distinguishing marks?(scars, tatoos:Detc)0

what it is you are wanting to do?
Is it a one off transfer or a constant interchange of info/data ?

Colour won't matter, ethernet cables come in all sorts of colours nowadays. Just look for "Crossed ethernet cable" or "cross wired", or get your local computer shop to make one for you.
A lot of modern network connectors will automatically detect if they're being connected back-to-back and not require a crossed cable, so if there's a chance that one of your PCs is modern, you might get away with a straight-wired cable. It's the same technology that routers and switches use to not care whether you're connecting to another switch or a PC or whatever.0 -
Assuming both computers are connected to your router, you can copy files through that. It might not be the fastest way, but it certainly works.
Look up "sharing folders" if you are using Windows. Then you can see the shared folder on the other computer. Copy and paste the files to where you want them on your local computer.0 -
Thanks for all your replies. Very helpful. :j0

if it is under 2gig (think the free minimum dropbox size), would use that, or a truecrypt container if there if the stuff had any personal, financial, or other unholy items in it.0

I'd go for Dropbox if the files aren't too big.
If it's a substantial amount of data, install an FTP server on one machine (eg Filezilla server) and an FTP client on the other (e.g. Filezilla client) and use that to transfer directly across to each other.0 -
There is always Bitorrent Sync. Data transfer is machine to machine without cloud hosting so there is no size limit and no privacy concerns.0
