Does the RCD protect all the sockets in the house, not just the kitchen?
Is your water on an immersion heater which comes on at night?
  • Are you on 3ph? Or do you have 2 cu's running off single phase?

these fault can be !!!!!! to track down .. found one that turne out to be the screw holding the socket on pinching the neural..every time the timer came on the rcd would trip...

defo get a ramp test done though

The RCD is just for the new kitchen/utility room circuit that is all new wiring.

The water is heated by the boiler which comes on at 6.30 but it's on a separate circuit.

I have no idea about your question sorry Sparkieguy -too technical for me but it you can explain it in simply I will go and look for a 3ph (?)

I don't even get in the room to open the fridge or anything else with a light on. First move is to switch the lights on at the door to the kitchen and that's when its obvious it's tripped. but thanks for the suggestion. I suppose it's something else I can rule out and then see what's left.

Thanks again folks. I get the feeling I was being strung along a bit by the (un)helpfull electrician but I will be following him around tomorrow watching what he does like a hawk and I will report back for your comments.

  • The electrician came yesterday and tested the RCD and the circuits. Just said the same as you guys had said, that it's probably an appliance. So it's just a case of isolating them all individually and waiting for it to trip I suppose. It will take ages because there's 10 and it hasn't fused for over a month, so I should have a definite answer by Christmas.........

  • May I ask a few questions..
When was the last time you defrosted your freezer?
When did you last do a roast in the oven?
    Last did a hot wash?

Just trying to think of something that might set it off.
