Try searching for SMD bulbs on e-bay. They are the next generation of LED. The cheapest come from Hong Kong and will take a few weeks by post, but they are bright or soft white, cheap and use hardly any energy at all. My friend's house looks like an operating theatre they are so bright. Warm white might be better....
Just an example of the bulb, not a recommended site

I got my LED bulbs from amazon a year ago for about £5 each, not had any problems with them but they are pretty bright compared to the halogens they replaced (even though they are supposed to have slightly lower output than halogen).0

I just got one of these: http://www.lightbulbs-direct.com/crompton---non-dimmable-led---12w-gls-daylight-bc-frosted/p3968/
Very bright, and excellent daylight colour. Not cheap though!0
