Mortgage protection policy

My late husband and I purchased a Mortgage Protection Policy via a Halifax Property Services Financial Adviser many years ago. The policy covered sickness, redundancy and injury.
We separated in 2000 and my husband remained in the marital home. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and claimed on the policy as he was unable to work. The claim was refused on the basis that we had failed to inform the company when we re-mortgaged the house. Sadly, he died four years later.
Would it be possible for me to pursue a claim for return of the premiums based on mis-selling. I know the company which issued the policy no longer exists, but I believe it was absorbed by another company.
Any information or help on this issue would be most welcome whether it's positive or negative.
Thanks in advance.
