Washing machine groaning/grinding noise

Hello there - looking for some opinions on what may be wrong with my washing machine (and if it's worth getting it fixed... or just buying a replacement).

It has started to make a low groaning/grinding noise when at the end of the rinse cycle. It's only been during this time, lasts about 20-30 seconds and is literally just before it switches to the spin cycle. Once on the spin cycle (and for the rest of the wash cycle) there are no unusual noises.

It's about 8 years old, is a washer-dryer (although we only use the dryer when absolutely necessary) and has worked just fine in that time, as long as we remember to wash the filter periodically.

We do on average 4 washes per week. We've been away for 3-4 days and since coming back have done two loads (yesterday and today). Which is when the noises began.

Obviously it's a bit disconcerting to hear noises like that, I have a fear that it might blow up or leak or something, so definitely won't be putting it on overnight or as I go out while it's doing this (I appreciate that you shouldn't do this anyway, but it is much more convenient...).

Does anyone have any thoughts on what may be the problem and if it's worth fixing (it's well out of any warranty)?

TIA

  • Have you checked the filter to see if it has anything caught up in it? We had a weird noise from our 3 year old machine which turned out to be a plastic collar stiffener from hubby's shirt caught in the filter...
