I always wrap lettuce or cabbage in tin foil and it helps keep it fresh I also do the same with celery In fact I finished off some celery this morning making some 'bottom of the fridge soup' with the sad looking bits of left over veg.I had a bendy couple of parsnips five slightly hairy carrots sad looking celery and a couple of sprouty spuds from the veg sack I chucked it all into a pot with two stock cubes and a dollop of lazy garlic and a splodge of coriander powder and cooked till soft and whizzed in the blender I have two litres of soup for lunches this week from stuff that was past its best but good enough for soup

I use the JML Keep Fresh Bags from Poundland - 5 small, 5 medium and 5 large in a pack. They are washable and re-usable. Salad stuff lasts so much longer in them. I also keep veg in them too."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

For lettuce of any sort, find a mug or bowl it will sit upright in and put an inch of water with a sprinkle of sugar in the bottom. Thinly slice off the bottom of the stalk and sit the lettuce upright in the sugary water. Refresh the water every few days and it will keep in a fridge for a least a week. Little Gem and iceberg etc often last a lot longer.0

I agree with the comments about little gem lettuce. Previously I was buying iceberg as I like the crunch, but when you cut iceberg, where you have cut it browns not long afterwards and then you have to chuck that bit. Little Gem gives more taste but still has a crunch and you can pull the leaves off more easily. I also line my salad drawer with a layer of paper towel and find that helps prolong life.0

Wrap your cucumber in cling film and if you prepare a salad bowl, put a sheet or so of kitchen paper towel in the bottom and one on top, then over with cling film.
If you buy the pre-washed ready to eat salads, put a sheet of kitchen paper in the bag after opening and it will last 2/3 days longer0 -
I find if you use an icepack/block with the salad and store it at the bottom of the fridge it will stay fresher for longer. If it does look a bit sad and limp when you take it out of the fridge, wash it in ice cold water and it will look and taste better"When I'm rolling in the benjamin's, I will throw you and your dog a bone, good night."0

1 Do not buy at the emporium. They are days old, and kept in a nitrogen environment, and under refigeration non the shelf. (Check under the plastic basket, you will see the coolers.)
2 Find a decent grocer in your town, we are lucky in Stroud to have one or two.
3 Buy only for three days.
And it goes on everything, in the BoP house. Chikka Tikka, hhome made, from butcher, rice and salad. Fish cakes, homemade, beans and salad. Sausages, SpagYetti hoops and salad. Roast Buzzard, Roast tatties, carrots etc, Rapsberry jam, for the chikka, and salad. That way yous get your 5 a day. BoP's Cholesterol is 3.4, 2.2 and you can drink as much wobbleade as you darn well like as well.0 -
