Second hand or new (+ Are new car warranties worth it?)...

I'm looking for a second hand car, around the £1500 mark, at the moment and it is proving quite hard work. I've only looked at two so far and they have both been pretty tired with some worrying faults. I'm scouring ads and Gumtree everyday. Not meaning to hijack the thread, but trying to point out that finding that second hand car may not be easy.
We also have a new car and managed to get a 3 year service plan thrown in, on a Vauxhall. I think retail price was £560, so about £190 a year.
Finally I've never been comfortable with the idea of paying a car over more than 3 years. On a rapidly deteriorating asset any longer has always appeared to me to carry a risk that I do not want to take.0
