Signing off JSA but in a couples claim

Hi It looks like I am going to be able to sign of JSA but it may leave me with no money

I am in a couples claim with my husband as he is over pension credit age and although the money I get is for both of us he is exempt from signing on.

I have the possibility of a job (second interview on Thursday) and it looks hopeful however it may cause us financial hardship, the money we get is all the income we have. I am due to sign on again next Wednesday so my next JSA payment would be 24th Feb, if I start my new job that money will be all we have to last us until I get paid which would be end of March.

So question is can my husband still claim his portion of JSA even if he does not have to sign on as until I get paid our income will be below the amount the law says we need to live on.

The other complication is that my Husband will get his state pension from 7th April with first payment being on 14th April (this has been confirmed by the DWP so he would have to sign off then anyway). Even if he claims pension credit it may not be paid in time for us to use it to live on

I want to work and I really want this job but we could be left with
no money to live on for all of March.

BTW I dont claim any benefits other then help with council tax

  • I think your best bet is to batten down the hatches today and spend the absolute minimum until you get paid. This is a short term problem, even utility bills etc can be a single month late. Do your sums and see if you can scrape by until you are paid. If your husband has the recent NI contributions I guess he could sign on for contributions JSA but I think that pension credit is an income based benefit so your salary would be taken into account.

If your income is going to be less than £222.05p/w then why doesn't your husband just claim pension credit until he receives his state pension?

You could sign off JSA now and have your husband claim Pension Credit for as a couples claim. This would help reduce the time without benefits.
You would have to inform them of a change in income you were successful in gaining employment.
