Council Tax re temporary guests

I'm a pensioner, live on my own and have the discounted single occupier rate. However, my daughter is staying with me for a while as she has just got back from Australia and currently has no home in the UK. She is both looking for employment and accommodation. I'm not sure on how long you can have someone to stay before it affects your council tax. Can anyone advise me?

From the moment it becomes her 'sole or main residence' then she is resident for council tax purposes.

As she has returned to the UK and is living with you whilst looking for work then she would be regarded as being resident and it would affect your discount.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks for that. Will get it sorted
