US Mobile?

Hi
Firstly not sure i should post this here, or on the Mobile forum ...so just shout if it's in the wrong place and I'll a mod to move it.
In April I'm travelling to New York and Las Vegas with my best friend. We won't be joint at the hip so I'd like to be able to keep in touch to arrange where we're meeting etc. We both currently have UK mobiles (me 02, her Three).
I was thinking of getting a US sim card from somewhere like Amazon - but not sure if that's the best thing, or just buying a cheap mobile in New York when I get there.
So ... I'd like to use the phone for texting/calling my friend who will be in the states (presumably still on her Three phone) and text back/receive texts from the UK. And prob a couple of US calls too.
Any advice?
Thanks!

get a cheap phone and get a 3 sim on a rolling 30day contract then you get free calls / texts / data using the allowance on that contract
if not get a cheap mobile and sim while in the US from somewhere like CWS or Walmart
more details of this on tripadvisor0 -
You can get something like this:
http://www.walmart.com/msharbor/ip/TracFone-LG440G-Cell-Phone/21997718
And a 60 minute top card will cost you $20.
I'm currently on my 3rd Tracfone, ( I'm not a gangster who uses disposable phones, it's just that I have a habit of leaving them in bars!), and although the quality isn't fantastic, they are cheap and easy to register when you buy them.0 -
When we go to US we just visit a local T Mobile shop & I get a Sim card activation pack for $10 then pre-load the $2 a day tariff for the length of our stay which includes all texts, calls & data 2G but feels way faster than UK 3G (US only apart from the texts) which means you can do all your smartphone facebook, ebay type stuff as well & no need to use a simple type phone out of the ark with no features
My Wife likes to have international calls & even faster data speeds so she gets the single month $50 4G deal to suit this, we just bung these in our UK phones & the shop makes sure they are activated & working OK
There are loads of T mobile shops & we have found that T mob have the best coverage out in the sticks & have no problem with the UK phones everything just works fine, we found others like Verizon (Vodafone) are a pain to use & set up & were more expensive .0
