Share registrar lost my cheque

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong place, but I rarely ask for help.

Back in September last year I sold some Standard Life shares which I had received when they floated on the stock market some years ago. The link on Std Life's website took me to a company called Capita. I sold my shares for £938 & awaited contact from Capita for my bank details. I emailed capita on numerous occasions & finally they replied stating that they had sent me a cheque & that I had cashed it.
Their fraud dept investigated it & advised me that they sent the cheque via standard mail (not requiring a signature), & that is was paid in to the bank account of a person with the same name as me (Apparently this person paid in 2 cheques which leads me to believe that Capita is at fault & no fraud has taken place).

I contacted the police, action fraud, & I wrote to this persons bank. None of them will give me an update on the situation.

I wrote to Capita asking them to give me a 100% guarantee that they sent the cheque to my address & not that of another customer of the same name. They did not reply.

I wrote in December & again in January, stating that as they have failed to complete the share deal with myself, I request that they send a cheque for £938 via recorded mail to my address. They have not replied.

Where do I stand with this? I can't afford to write this amount of money off, & there's no way I could afford to take them to court.

Hi xylophone, the letters were sent 'signed for', & I have written to the financial ombudsman. They replied stating that they have no jurisdiction over share registrars. I will now write to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, many thanks for that.

But surely you would like a reply in writing from Capita?

They did write to me advising which bank the cheque had been paid in to, but they have not replied to my last 2 letters where I state that they have failed to complete the share deal with myself.
