Claiming Housing Benefit on a low income

After being on JSA for a year or so I have got a part time job, 11 hours a week, paying £88 p/w. As I have a health problem I'm unable to work many more hours than this. I have informed the job centre about this work but am still signing on. Obviously I want to sign off but am very confused about my eligibility to still claim housing benefit and Council tax reduction.

I have have just spent a very unhelpful morning on the phone to DWP and my local authority. They both refuse to tell me if I can still claim housing benefit. I imagine it is likely as I'm working less than 16 hours and don't have any savings. I have filled out my change of circumstance form and will be handing it in tomorrow, meanwhile my claim for housing benefit is suspended.

I'm just wondering if anyone is in a similar situation and what benefits they are still receiving?

Thanks

  • Also I have used the benefit calculator but it said I wasn't entitled to housing benefit but then I used a different one and it said I was!

    Do you have a partner?

HB and CT Support is based on household income.

If you are single then you can claim HB and CT support based on your low income.

You can still keep your JSA claim as you are working under 16 hrs a week and will have your NI contributions paid. However, you will have to adhere to your Job Seekers agreement.
  • when I worked on a zero hours contract- some months my wages were low, so I took my wage slip each month to the council and they calculated if I was entitled to any help.
