FTB Wants to buy under the Right to Buy Scheme

:embarasse Sorry, sorry - I meant that if you can buy your house from the council, and have your tenancy count as a discount, you should look into it - not to take the deal the salesman is offering, because in all liklihood you won't have to go through him to sort it out.

Our HE changed the rules of how tenancy got credited towards a discount for buying, and as it got nearer the deadline, there was a flurry of activity from companies like the salesman who called to you, to avail of the scheme. It's not so much scaremongering as the end of a good deal. You'll still be able to by your house from the HE, just the parameters for how discounts are calculated will be changed (which means you'll get less of a discount that you can get before it changes). It's worth your while to contact the HE as advised and get it from the horse's mouth how it works.

As others have suggested, do your sums, contact the HE, don't rely on the salesman. If, after you've done your research, it looks like you can do it, good luck. We did it and have not regreted it.

Just to add, you would probably be able to get a mortgage for 75% of the council's valuation fairly easily. Have you factored in the costs of owning your home?? I know the council in our area are reluctant to do any work so as a tenant I end up doing it myself anyway. But, what about the essentials - boiler/heating maintenance, emergency repairs, breakdowns etc. Can all be very costly. Still, there's nothing like owning your own home is there?? Good luck.
