insurance where to start

Hello everyone,
I have just returned from abroad after 30 years in Europe. I have been told that to insure a car in the UK I will have to start again no claims wise. This I can understand even though I drove over there for the last 16 years accident free.
My question is where is the best place to get a quote that would suit my circumstances. I have not bought a car yet or know what make or model so I cannot go to the online sites for a look. Sorry for being so vague.....Thanks:doh:

I'd avoid the online sites for a deal in your situation anyway, you might find a broker (and a human at the end of a phone) that can offer you some form of discount for your current record.

You won't really want a quote without a car though so run some through the online sites, see what looks insurable (just put zero no claims in) and see what you get back. Then speak to a person about it.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

If you had a policy in Europe some insurers will accept no claims bonus earned abroad, though you may have to jump through a few hoops like getting written confirmation of it in English from your last insurer. A decent broker should be able to assist with finding someone who will offer this.
  • Just had a look at an online site. At present in a state of shock.I used to be with AXA in Germany, then I moved to Austria and my new broker tried to move me to a different company they refused to transfer my details as the new quote was much cheaper. They had to be reminded of the law but they were not happy. I can see I am going to have problems with this. I cannot believe the quote I got it`s more than the cost of the car.

If you were with Axa previously then it might be worth trying them again over here - they should be able to verify your claims history?

Might be worth trying online - no harm in giving it a go with an example car you may want to get.

Done some quotes today and rather surprised at the results. With zero NCB (NCB already in use on other vehicle) I was quoted under £250 pa premium. It was actually lower with no excess than having £500 XS which made no sense to me so it may be worth trying different scenarios.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
