Quinoa

Options
Today seems to be a good day for recipies so I hope someone can help. I've been advised to eat quinoa, a south american grain that is a rice, cous cous substitute. It has real potential but is pretty bland on its own.

Does anyone have some good recipies for this?? Veggie if pos.

Thanks :D

It has it's own corporation and website, there are lots of recipies on there, it's quite interesting too, tells you all about the stuff, did you know it comes in 5 different variations, flour, pasta, flakes, grain and polenta. There are recipies for all of them here:

And there are some more (mostly salads and pilaf) here:

When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

    Thank you :)
  • Thank you Galtizz.
By coincidence, I had just gone into town and bought some quinoa at H&B to try out (only vaguely having any idea of what to do with it).
Those websites have been full of ideas.
    Lots of :):):)
  • Its great with chilli - not as heavy as rice and you can make a 'rice' pudding with it as well.

Don't forget though, that unlike rice, cous cous etc, it is a protein, so is far better for you than those other grains (esp. as a veggie!) :)

I have no recipes I'm afraid. Just a spare packet in the cupboard if you want it - lol!

I've tried cooking it in various recipes and can only come up with the same result - YUK! :D
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
  • The white quinoa is easier to eat with other dishes than the red - the red always seems to be a bit hard whatever way i cook in - it just doesn't cook the same as the white.

Oh Quackers, don't put me off. I too have just bought a box from H&B!

At least I have a friend who I know likes it if all else fails. I'll tap her up for a few recipes when I go to pick kids up.:)

Try cooking it in veg stock to give it a bit more flavour.

Use it as a subsitute for rice or pasta.

Its quite nice served with veg on the top - eg. roasted veg or steamed veg ( courgettes, sugar-snap peas, carrots, peppers etc) and topped with toasted pine nuts and a dressing ( olive oil, lemon juice and herbs).

Or you could cook it then add kidney beans, peppers, onions, sweetcorn, herbs etc and mix it all together.

    Oh getting hungry now!
