Whitton & Isleworth Property Market Advice

Hi all
My Wife & I are looking to move to a new property with a shorter & cheaper daily train commute into Clapham Junction.
We are just at the beginning of our search & was wondering if anyone on here currently lives in Whitton or Isleworth or has knowledge of the area? We are planning some visits to the area in the next few weeks to get a feel for both places.
We would like a 2 bedroom house as we currently live in an 2 bedroom first floor maisonette & our price range is in the 275k - 300k range. I appreciate that this price bracket will limit us as from a few looks on rightmove it seems that this part of the world has a premium in house price.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Be careful in this area as there is a big smelly sewage works in the area.
If you go looking this time of year you will not get the same odour effect that you get in the middle of the summer heat when things are really humming......................0 -
Also, there are some roads where you need to plan days away or days in when there's a rugby match or other event at Twickenham on.0

We used to live in Isleworth (moved out Oct 2012) and would second the comment about Mogden - Isleworth isn't too bad but you do notice it a bit!
My thoughts
- check where you are on the flight path - depending on which routing they are using you may notice the planes to a greater or lesser extent, especially when sitting out in the garden in summer time.
- it is zone 4, so depending on where you're planning to get to, it can take 40mins to get into Waterloo (on South West trains, who don't ave the best reputation of the commuter trains) which isn't the shortest journey ever.
- prices are going up here, we sold a 3 bed Victorian terrace for 450k in Oct 2012 and similar are on the market for 550k at the moment (and dropping off the market very soon after going on, so sale price is very probably very near this), so you may need to hunt around for a 2 bed in your budget - should be doable though.
- we used to live very near the West Middlesex Hospital - very good when I was in labour with no1, not so good if frequent ambulance sirens will annoy you / keep you awake.
- on a positive, it is a very nice area, lots of families, has good range of local shops, banks, post office, etc and the fish & chip shop on the Twickenham Road is excellent! We have recommended it to a few of our friends moving out west from areas such as Putney / Barnes, and the estate agents say they get a lot of renters moving out of Twickenham as Isleworth is 100 - 150k cheaper than Twickenham when they come to buy.
If you want to know anything more specific then do ask.0 -
Whitton's OK but I'd stay away as far as possible from the borders with Hounslow and Feltham. Both places are putrid dumps and going south by the day!
There are some lovely properties in Isleworth but they are nearly all wedged between Hounslow and Brentford. Brentford used to be an appalling dump too but has possibly gone a bit more upmarket since I lived nearby 30 years ago.0 -
Before going to view any properties in Whitton do your research and make sure it is actually a Whitton property. A lot of idiots in Hounslow market their properties as being in Whitton.
I also agree with the above. Stay away from the borders of Hounslow and Feltham. Feltham is genuinely one of the grimmest places in the South and Hounslow is not very far behind. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi everyone
Thank you so much for your replies so far & I have made a note of all your points.
I have always had family around the Twickenham & Fulwell station area so I understand about the plane noise & the traffic around Rugby match days.
Yes I have noticed people trying to claim a property is in Whitton when it clearly isn't! Around 1 mile from Whitton Station is our limit but not in Hanworth, Feltham or Hounslow boarders.
Also we are currently based in Staines which is outside Zone 6 so even a move to zone 4 makes a big difference on the old season ticket & train time.
Appreciate the point about house prices & understand that most of the time the asking price is what will need to be offered.0 -
Regarding the water treatment works, we've lived right by the west border of the works (about 100 feet from the perimeter) for the past 17 years and I'd say we notice the smell maybe half a dozen times a year at most. The predominant wind direction in the UK is from the south-west so any smell is much more noticeable if you live to the north or east of the works. It's only on the occasional still summers evenings when you've got your windows open and there's a slight east wind that you get a bit of a whiff. It's really not that bad (provided you live to the west of it).
It's not a bad place at all. Be aware of potential noise if you're close to the A316 as well.
Oh, and as for the rugby, you just put the big game dates in the diary and make sure you're not in the car a before the start or for a couple of hours after the final whistle. A tiny bit of planning makes things so much easier.0 -
Hi, bumping the tread as I am in a very similar situation and really hope for some advise. Jonathandaws - have you moved in either Whitten or Isleworth yet? any recommendations for the newbie?
I am looking to buy a 3-bed house in St-Margarets/Twickenham area with a very limited budget (for that area) of around 500K. There isn't anything in that price brackets in St-Margarets/Twickenham itself, so I have started looking at the borders of these area. So would really appreciate any comments on 2 areas below, which one would be preferable?
1 - Crane Avenue, TW7 7JN - border of St-Margarets/Isleworth (I think? Or is it still St-Margarets? Or already Isleworth?)
2 - Park Crescent, TW 2 6NT - border of Twickenham / Whitton (or is it still Twickengam as before A316?)
I am not from this part of London so would really really appreciate any comments about the above locations and generally about good areas around where I can still buy for around 500K. Transport is very important consideration, and schools will be important in the future.
Thanks a lot in advance!0
