If he's a reluctant reader, what about starting off with a newspaper or a sporting magazine?

My DS left Reception unable to read his key words, so was put in a catch up class in yr 1. After that when teacher asked class to pick a book to read, he's pick up the dictionary or encyclopedia.

Now he's almost 14 and there's still more authors he dislikes than likes. His form tutor teacher IT so his classroom is the computer room and when teacher tells them during form time to find something to read, he reads the news on-line.

I've looked through this thread with interest for getting ideas, but the only thing I could safely take home without him having a look first would be the autobiographies. If your son is like mine I'd go with non-fiction books to start with at least.

I'd agree with comments that at age 15 he's going to be choosing his own stuff to read and the best bet would be magazines that fit with what he's interested in - maybe sports or gaming related. And autobiographies of footballers or racing drivers? Is he a Top Gear fan? My OH has some books which are collections of newspaper articles by James May and Jeremy Clarkson, so you can easily read one chapter at a time.
  • I've read the first two books in the Assassins Creed collection and there decent reads. Based on the videogame series, so you need to have played the game first otherwise there are obvious spoilers but good reads.
  • Thanks so much all. Some really excellent suggestions ans food for thought.

  • I picked upon the fact you said he is a reluctant reader. Both my boys are the same. The eldest couldn't see the point in reading stuff that 'wasn't real' and consequently never read fiction but would, and still happily reads non fiction. The youngest hardly reads anything other than what is necessary for school and surprisingly does well in English literature with a fertile imagination and good use of words. If a child doesn't want to read no matter how fabulous others think the book, they won't read.

My brother read one book - Robinson Crusoe, and that was it, he did read comics though, and it didnt do him any harm, he reads loads of books now. Dont force a child to read, they won't enjoy it, and it will do them no good.

Just one thought, OP, and please don't take it the wrong way.

Does your son see you and his father reading, enjoying a book?

Your initial question was a regular at Parents' Evenings and I was always tempted to ask the parents if they read, if there were books in the house.
