Currently have 51 primera don't think it will pass next mot,I use D/Ds 52 yaris for shopping but she is moving away and won't be needing a car.My problem is I need to transport my D/M to appointments ,shopping ,plus her mobility scooter or her wheelchair, may have to travel to see D/D and move her stuff around ,feel I could do with a little bigger car than the yaris also something not to high for me to lift the heavy scooter.
Always have to consider others needs rather than mine to get a car I want ,good advice given on here and I could do with some .

What makes you think the Primera won't pass its next MOT? What is currently wrong with it?

Needs a new side light ,garage said not worth tampering with ,may need new shock absorbers, and brakes, new tyres ,this is the opinion of the mechanic at the garage.I only do about 5k mileage but could do with better mpg, that's why I like the yaris but it is small and awkward lifting the scooter, also long journeys bit uncomfy.
Always have cars serviced ,but the primera looks tired and family feels I should update (snobs).

!!!!!!?!! These are all wear and tear items that need replacing on any car!!

If you only do 5k miles a year, MPG doesn't matter and you will be better off with a petrol rather than a diesel (see the mis-selling a car thread to see why doing low mileage in a diesel is a bad idea: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4892328)

Shocks, Brakes, Tyres are needed on any car and a new side light for 50p will fix that!

Fix what you have. It will cost VERY little in the grand scheme of getting a newer car!
  • As Netwizard said stick with the petrol trust me low mileage diesel is not a good idea, as for your repairs stick your reg into eurocarparts.com and get some prices, also if you want a yaris look at the yaris verso
  • And don't listen to your family. They obviously don't know much.

A quick look on carparts4less.co.uk (Eurocarparts internet branch and cheaper) shows a pair of front shocks at £26 and a pair of rear Sachs ones at £80 so just over £100 (and that if if you need all 4 doing!)

Tyres (assuming 185/65/15 which is the biggest size tyre the primera does come in and likely to be the most expensive), you can get tyres in this size for £35-£40.

Discs and pads will be dirt cheap, and while you may be thinking this is a large part of the value of the car, remember that it is better the devil you know. If the Primera is reliable and does what you need it to do, why change?!

    ^ This.

As the owner of an "old" car, it always winds me up when people say that having £200 worth of repairs done to get it through an MOT is "more than the car's worth".

It might be more than the current value of the car, but that's irrelevant because I already own it. What's relevant is the cost of replacing the car - and it would cost me a lot more than £200 to do that.

I paid £3895 for my car 11 years ago, it stands me at nothing. I get 40 mpg and it is as reliable as they come. For £200 a year (and it isn't every year) plus the cost of a service and MOT it's a bargain.

If your family want you to have a new car let them buy you one. Put it down on your xmas list.

Side light as in a complete unit or a bulb? £30 or much less. Shocks from £15 each.

You can go and spend £10,000 on a car. It will lose more in depreciation that the amount of fuel it will save you.

And still need all the things you mentioned in 6 months time.

Looks tired. get it into a bodyshop for a decent polish and a full valet.
