Hi there

I've has a SupportPlus WMA/MP3 player for around a decade.

I've always streamed tracks from my cds onto this device meaning that they get converted as WMA files.

Now though I'm trying to used MP3 type.

They store fine - i.e. they can be played back from the device through a laptop great. However when played through the device it sounds as though the music is underwater.

Hence suspect the device isnt up to playing MP3 files. I'm lucky I still have the manual but there isnt anything to help in these.

So....back to question (unless anyone can tell me what I might be doing with the MP3 files) can anyone recommend a free conversion site / tool that doesnt loose too much quality.

Cheers in advance

PS just checked the disc that came with the device - it says Win 98 only!! Hence the player is probably closer to 15 years old

Google has many mp3 to wma convertors. But I doubt anyone's going to recommend them, because wma is pretty much a legacy format, and as wma has never been publicly documented, any implementation is either going to use Microsoft's codec or it's going to be reverse engineered.

Depending on volumes, I'd be tempted to burn a red book CD of the MP3s and then reimport it via the toolchain you have that works.

As securityguy said..... google is your friend.

    I've used this one http://www.freemake.com/free_audio_converter/
to convert flac to MP3 without issue.
It purports to work with WMA but I cannot vouch for it's effectiveness

Thats exactly what I needed i.e. I'd already spotted loads on google - just the specifics of one that might be 'ok'

This specific one worked a treat.

    Much appreciated - thank you

    Or try Format Factory (http://download.cnet.com/FormatFactory/3000-2194_4-10968547.html)
I have used this for years for videos and audio - it is good, free and fairly intuitive to use.

Another vote for Format Factory here - Its an excellent convertor and the last couple of versions seem to have sorted its occasional bugginess with certain processors/on networks etc.

Also, a lot of the "convertors" that hit the top of a Google search are mighty suspicious to me - I reckon you could end-up with a load of spyware or worse if you tried installing them!
