BMW auto s are gr8 but for a new drive insurance could be high depending on age, My mum has a mazda 3 auto and she has never has a problem with it, mpg is not the best tho, a toyota yaris auto is also a good car.

Why not just make a recomendation.
An E39 Auto can be had for very little money

well it needs to be fuel efficient (on the road alot) and 5 door with decent room yaris looks good already had that in mind need it to be reliable i like the prius hybrid but pricey!

We drive a megane auto, bought for £1,600 55 plate with 60k on the clock.

Lovely to drive compared to our old rickety (manual) yaris. Loads of room and runs really well. I'll never go back to a manual car now, I cannot see the attraction.

Better fuel economy? Plus of course being in full control of what gear the car is in when. But the OP wants an automatic so obviously this is moot.
