Having a nightmare with my daughters passport application... please help...

Hello all.

Trying to sort out a passport for my daughter who is 6.

She has a current passport but it expires in March and need to renew before a holiday in July.

Me and her mother were both born after 1982 and not married, I hold a current in date UK passport however hers is out of date.

I am really confused by the guidance notes. It is saying that as we were both born after 1982 we need to enter both maternal and paternal details in order to progress.

The problem is that she does not have any contact whatsoever with her parents and does not even know where they are.

Can anyone advise? Will mine and her details and my parents details be sufficient?

Can you put 'not known' if you don't know certain details?

  • We just had this problem recently when I washed OH's passport and the form needed his parent's details for a replacement. He hasn't seen his biological dad since he was a toddler and his mum has been unable to get a copy of her birth certificate and didn't know where she was born. Luckily we got DOB's from their marriage certificate but had no idea where either of them were born. I rang the passport helpline and they said just to give the details you know - I guess your partner would know her parent's full names (if not they'll be on her birth cert) - and then in section for other information just write that she has no contact with parents and details unknown. Because she's had a passport before it'll be fine as they'll have her expired passport details and your daughter should get her passport without issue. If you're still worried then you can find your local passport office telephone number online and ask them what to write.

  • Using the online version of the form the only question that is compulsory around that area is the maternal grandmother surname. All the others are optional
  • As its a renewal there is no need to provide grandparents details - nationality would have been established when the original passport was issued. Just enter parents passport numbers at section 4 - doesn't matter if they have expired.

Thats what I would have thought but doing a childs renewal online it does still ask for maternal grandmother surname

With names and dates of birth, it isn't difficult to find a person's birth registration details.

I just did a dummy child renewal online, it only asked for mother and father, not grandmother.

OP, have you tried the online forms, for that you only need your name and passport number and the fathers name. You can leave the fathers passport number off.

Did you put the young age of the parents in? It was that which triggered the maternal grandmother requirement
  • The details you have will be sufficient - just write in section 8 that you don't know the grandparents details, as she has already had a passport.
