Hi
Im writing on behalf of my friend who hasn't got an account here. Few days ago he was doing some cleaning in his loft and found box of never opened mail, which he had forgoten about. He found a cheque from Central Accounting Office of Her Majesty's Courts Service (few years ago he was victim of an assault, never went to court but now it looks like case has ended up there) for £50. Cheque has been signed in 2008.
I know cheques are valid 6 months, but is there any difference in this case?
Many thanks

Considering it was 6 years ago, it might not be accepted any more. Try it, what have you got to lose? Apart from the bank not accepting it?
Some banks will attempt to cash a cheque after 6 months. I think some will attempt them upto 6 years of the date.0 -

No difference. And if the payee doesn't have an account how would it be banked? Going via a cheque encasher with an out of date cheque isn't going to work.
In theory cheques are valid 6 years - in practice it's just 6 months unless the cheque specifies a shorter period.
He / she could try getting the Court to issue an uncrossed warrant - but I doubt they will wear it after all this time.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
He obviously hasn't missed the money then - so bin it.
If he had an account I would try to pay it in and wait to see if it was paid or not.0 -

Asking about the difference, I meant the fact, that this cheque was issued by the court (it doesn't even look like normal cheque) and I thought money might have been taken from payee account just after the case and now will be paid from court account. But I thing it's gonna be too late now anyway.
Thanks for help
