new job 16 hrs per week

Hi. I've managed to secure a part time job of 16 hrs per week. Although it isn't perfect I've practically been forced into this. The plan is to find another job that can work around this one. I need to apply for housing benefit but on the form it requires proof of earning of either: last 5 payslips if paid weekly, last 3 payslips if paid fortnightly, or last 2 payslips if paid monthly However, if I can't provide these payslips there is a section for the employer to fill out, but this still requires him to give details of last five weekly payments, or last three fortnightly payments or last two monthly payments, or last four weekly payments

I have only been working for a week so I don't have any of these payslips so how can I get my benefit? My landlord will want his rent come next weekend and he's already given me a week's grace for which I am meant to be paying back in installments.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

You can still apply for HB and send the proof when you have it.

Give the council a ring to confirm this.
  • Thanks for the quick reply, pmlindyloo. Will I get the benefit awarded as soon as I apply, or do they have to wait to see the proof? I'm guessing that the proof they require would be accepted in the form of the employer's declaration that's on the last page of the claim form? Otherwise there's no point in having it on there? Got a feeling my new employer will be slow at providing wage slips.

According to the notes for the HB form https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/255776/hctb1_print.pdf

they will not pay until they see the proof.

However, I agree that the declaration from your employer will be the proof that they need to start the claim.

Why don't you take the form into the council and then they can tell you what else they need and when your claim will start? - better than posting and waiting for return letters.
  • Thanks again. Yes I will make an appointment to see them. Hopefully if there's any delays my landlord will understand. I'm just now wondering if there's another way other than showing payslips, the man I'm working for hasn't an office or any other staff. I wonder, to make things easier for him, and in turn for me, maybe hand written payslips will suffice? It's just I can't see him paying extra for an accountant to be doing this every week. I think he just wants to put it all through at the end of the tax year, which I suppose there's nothing wrong with that but it won't help me obtain the benefit I need for my rent.

Can you not get your boss to fill in the form for you with what you will be earning (future earnings). If it is 16 hours a week then the amount shouldn't change.

Slightly off post, but this is why many landlords are loathe to take on people or even carry on with a current tenant, if they are having to rely on housing benefit to pay the rent.
If I was in the buy to let game I would have a mortgage to pay out of the rent I receive and would doubt that my mortgage company would be impressed if I told them that they would get paid when I get paid (via housing benefit)!

Some see private landlords as having a social responsibility to their tenants to help them over the times when the rent can't be paid.
  • Thanks for that, TattyG. It doesn't say on the form for projected wages, just asks what my normal wage is likely to be. I don't know why they are asking to see past evidence of employment. Surely they must know by now that it doesn't always work like this and provide the paperwork in cases like mine.
  • What were you doing before you started this job?
  • Hi, stormyweather. I was unemployed, claiming job seekers allowance and housing benefit. Because I've signed off now they've suspended my housing benefit and sent me this change of income form.

I'm in the same boat and my office were happy with a printed email of a work start date and hours worked with the pay rate, I handed those in on tues and got a letter on friday or saturady saying they will start paying and for me to just hand in the monthly wage slip when I get it.
